The Zawisca Czarny (The Black Knight)
Polish scouts began their sailing education between 1917-1919 in Vladivostock. Between the wars the sea scout movement grew rapidly to result in purchasing a wooden schooner - the Petrea in 1934. In winter 1934/35 the Petrea was reconstructed into a training vessel and given the name of a Polish knight-Zawisza Czarny at the request of her captain general Mariusz Zaruski. Before the outbreak of the war she visited 27 ports in the Baltic and North Seas region countries.
During the war the Zawisza was captured by the Nazis and taken to Germany where she was used as a training ship for the Kriegsmarine cadets. The yacht which was found and brought back to Gdansk had to be sunk in 1949 because of irreparable damage. Nowadays the wreck lies at 8 meters deep at the position of 54*40"N, 18*34"E. The tradition of the former yacht is continued by a reconstructed fishing trawler the Cietrzew. The superstructures were cut out at the break of 1960/61 reconstruction, a ballast keel was added, the masts were erected and the accommodation quarters were arranged. And in this way... The Zawisza Czarny II came into being.
"The Zawisza has been in service for many years enabling us to experience a great adventure. On her board we visited all the countries of the Baltic and North Seas and sailed several times on the Mediterranean and across the Atlantic Ocean. In 1984 the Zawisza took part in the Tall Ships' Races on the Great American and Canadian Lakes becoming famous for the rescue of 8 members of the British barge the Margues, which sunk during the race of the Bermudian coast. For the deed The Olympic Committee awarded the Fair Play prize to the crew of the Zawisza. Our participation in the Tall Ships' Races was not accidental. The Zawisza takes part in all kinds of activities connected with the Tall Ships' Races very regurlary. In 1989/90, in a multistage voyage, the yacht sailed around the world. Two years later she participated in the Columbus - '92 festivities commemorating the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. The years 1995, 1996 and 1997, the Zawisza Czarny spent mainly on the Mediterranean organizing cruises for groups and individual people. We are ready to invite and entertain 28 trainee crew members on board (previous sailing experience unnecessary). While sailing across the seas and oceans, visiting numerous ports, the Zawisza has become known all over the world. Thanks to the Zawisza a lot of people have experienced something exciting, extraordinary and unforgettable. So...don't hesitate and join us! Make the cruise of your dreams come true as everybody knows that 'Life is like a fairy tale under the sails of the Zawisza'. We are also offering you some cultural programmes while sailing, namely, marine ecological and historical ones. If you wish we may also accept your own programme of the cruise"
